What have we lost with the use of AI

Artificial has been around for decades now, famously making its debut from the Turing Test in 1950. This test, designed by Alan Turing, would see if a person could determine the difference in text conversation: 1 with a human and the other with a computer.

If the judge could not determine if it was a human or computer on the other end of the text, then the computer has passed the test. This concluded the question “can computers think?”.

This version of AI is completely foreign to us nowadays as we have large language modules (LLM) all over the internet. Every surface in every company nowadays has or will have AI interweaved in their daily routines. Within a second, services such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, and so many others can give you an answer to nearly every question that exists on the internet. This is based off of information that can be found on the internet and then stores previous questions that humans have asked it. Sure, this is very helpful to the user and sure, this is basically just a better google. Technology will continue to advance, but what have we already lost with AI taking over.

Schooling as a start is the largest impacted area I believe. On every homework sheet, students can just take pictures of their work, put it into AI and have it done within seconds. Less learning will be going on and more cheating will occur. This is already impacted many schools where AI detecting systems are now being implemented. Essays are being written, excel sheets are getting organized, and tests are being taken all by AI.

There is a large lacking in technical skills and understanding occurring by students across the globe. Just this past year, a class I took last year where the final was taken on a computer at home, was switched to now be in person on paper. This switch was made due to the amount of AI help students could access and help them pass. This is where I see some hope of returning to pen and paper, where teachers cannot control the work students are passing off as their own. Pen and paper is the most technical way for a student to really think on their own. I believe they should still have access to the internet to help with their search, but they still need to be able to articulate information seen online and then form it into their own thoughts and ideas.

Technology will always advance and society will have to continue to deal with it while managing it. Artificial Intelligence is at a place in time where it is completely removing the need for specialized technical skills. Why need a picture, when AI can build you one in a second. I believe there needs to be some laws put into place to restrict and limit where when and who can use it.
